Thanks to power of the Internet and satellite television, we as fans of sports in Malaysia are not left in want when it comes to sports coverage. Indeed, August is a month packed with events ranging from football to Formula 1.

But, let’s forget about the English Premier League for a moment because this August our time, attention, and cheer is reserved solely for one very important event: the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) kicking off on the 19th of August 2017.

We cannot be more excited for it, and here are 5 reasons why…

You can be there in person

Ask any fan of sports and they will tell you nothing beats watching an event live. With our country hosting the SEA Games again this year, you can watch all your favourite athletes showcase their skills in person without needing a flight ticket or hotel room.

It’s been a long wait and it’s going to be another long wait

The SEA Games is a biennial sporting event, meaning we’ve waited two years since the last games. More importantly, the event is held in a different country every year and basing on past rotation, it’ll be at least 10 years before Malaysia becomes the host again. That’s a really long wait.

It caters to all sports fans

One of the conditions that a host country must comply with when hosting the SEA Games is to stage at least 22 sports, meaning there is something for everyone regardless if you are into field games or martial arts. It’s a win, win.

It will feature on-ice games for the very first time

With Malaysia’s hot and humid climate, we didn’t think there would ever be on-ice events at the SEA Games. We have to admit, we’ve never been this glad to be wrong.

This year’s SEA Games will feature figure skating, ice hockey, and short track speed skating for the very first time! The best part: entry to these events at Empire City, Damansara is absolutely free!

It’s honestly the only time you can sport face paint

Despite being fashionable people, we have yet to embrace wearing face paint as a form of fashion statement. But, when worn during a major sporting event such as the upcoming SEA Games, you’ll not only be showing your Malaysian spirit but also be the envy of everyone who didn’t turn up with face paint.

Excitement shooting through the roof and tickets in hand, we’re ready to scream our lungs out in support of our country and our athletes. If you haven’t gotten your tickets, now is the time to do so!

Oh! Fun fact, the mascot for this year’s SEA Games is inspired by the graceful and powerful Malayan Tiger that personifies and embodies the spirit of the Games. Like a true athlete, Rimau is competitive, but competes with grace and friendliness.
