Legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, popularly known SPB, who won millions of hearts with his youthful voice, passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment for of Covid-19 in a hospital at Chennai, India. He was 74 at the time of his passing.

SPB had sung over 40,000 songs in a career spanning nearly 55 years, had been undergoing medical treatment since August 5. SPB was admitted with “mild” symptoms of Covid-19.

“Don’t bother calling me. I am fine. I will be fine,”. Those were the last words his fans heard from him in a video he posted on his social media.

On August 13, after his oxygen saturation dropped, he was moved to the intensive care unit and was put life support. His condition remained critical although he was showing signs of recovery. SPB’s son S P Charan had a series of released video messages assuring people that he was hopeful that his father would recover from the viral infection.

On September 19, his son said his father's condition was improving although he was still on life support. "He started oral intake of food since yesterday. That should help him grow stronger and take care of other vitals also,” the son said.

However, yesterday the hospital treating the legend said Balasubrahmanyam was “extremely critical”. Doctors said the singer, who was on road to recovery, suffered a brain hemorrhage and was put on maximal life support. But that could not save his life. The legend passed away on a Friday afternoon September the 25th.

SPB is survived by his wife Savithri, daughter Pallavi and son Charan.

His soulful voice lives on in more than 40,000 songs. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, sir.
