M.Sundramoorthy, best known by his stage name as SunDrra, is a Malaysian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician and a scriptwriter.
SunDrra is the son of M.S.Veeriah, AMN and Valliamai. His father was a government servant, besides being a writer and a part-time musician who led a band called Uthaya Sooriyan from the 1960s till the 80s.
SunDrra’s father played the saxophone in the band alongside many legendary singers like Mariappan, Re.Shanmugam, Shanmuganathan, Sinappan and Lawrence.
Growing up in the 80s musical hub played an important role in nurturing his interest towards music.
SunDrra took up his keyboard and guitar lessons in Yamaha Music and later pursued his Musical Studies in Aswara (Akademi Seni dan warisan Negara), and he also acquired basic Carnatic Music lessons all by himself.
SunDrra started his career as a Music Composer in 1996 with the song Purapadu Tamila for the LOCK UP Album. Later in the year 1997 SunDrra and his friend Gopalakrishnan launched an album called Astana Oru Puthu Ragam under the Label of Alai Osai. All the songs in the album were composed and written by Sundrra himself. Later on in 1998 another sequel album was released, titled Astana Thirudan under the label of Alai Osai. Sundrra composed and wrote the lyrics of all the songs in the album too.
After his third album he became a freelance composer and went on to compose many hits of the decade.
One of the trend-setting albums he composed was the hip-hop album, Boomerangx, which was the first full-fledged Tamil hip-hop album in the world - Tracks like "Kanave Kanave", “Jokana Cari Makan" and “Moxsha" were among the top hits composed by Sundrra.
Later, in the year 2004, SunDrra composed a massive hit that went viral before the era of social media, "Sottu Sotta".
In 2006, the follow-up to Boomerangx, Satriye Sambrajyam was launched and one of the songs from the album "Anbe Sagiye", composed by Sundrra, also became a mega hit song.
In 2010, Sundrra even began to tackle the Malay music Industry by doing Malay single projects for various Malay singers, as well as a few English tracks too.
Not to mention he’s also worked with numerous Indian playback singers and musicians like Naresh Iyer, Diwakar, Priyadarshini, Sathyan, Madhumitha, Srik and Bobo Shashi.
SunDrra has composed more than 100 songs in the Malaysian Music Industry since 1996, many of which still rule our playlist till today!
