Malaysian Star of the Month

Malaysian Star Of The Month: Santesh Kumar

Get to know the multilingual singer.

malaysian star of the month: santesh kumar

This month, we’d like to introduce you to singer and composer, Santesh Kumar.

The pop singer first rose to fame in 2014 when his Malay single, “Amalina” (off of his album, Silap Kahwin), became the talk of the town. Following the release of the album, he continued making music and released another album, Tangkap Basah, in 2016, catapulting his fame to even greater heights.

A career in music was written in the stars for Santesh, who spent his childhood tagging along with his father, a musician, to shows and events. It’s no surprise then that he also inherited his father’s musical gift.

As the years went by, Santesh began sharpening his music talent, signing up for music classes and participating in music competitions such as Vaanavil Superstar. When he turned 15, he decided to try something new and shifted his interest to music composition.

After the unfortunate passing of his father, Santesh was broken, but his father’s wish of seeing him become a successful musician pushed him to work even harder. This determination led to a number of achievements including winning the Vasantham Superstar competition in Singapore, and IClon, which kickstarted his career in singing and composing Malay songs.

More than that, Santesh was also recording cover songs that appeal to the younger generation. During the same time, he was given the opportunity to sing with famous Malaysian artistes, Awie and David Arumugam.

When his cover songs started going viral, Santesh saw it as a confidence boost to venture into the Malay music industry. And he was right in doing so.

Proving that language is not a barrier in music, he produced his first Hari Raya song, followed by “Amalina” in Malay AND Tamil. The Malay version trended on YouTube for over a month, catching the attention of many Malaysians.

Besides Malay songs, Santesh is also known for his Tamil singles such as “Katthi” and his recent one, “Socks Bala”, which is a promo video for Neeyum Naayum.

He’s quite the singer, isn’t he? Get to know more about Santesh when we share an exclusive Hot Seat video featuring him soon.
