Vijaya Gurunatha "Vijay" Sethupathi, who has been dubbed Makkal Selvan by the public, is an Indian film actor, producer, dialogue writer, lyricist, and singer.
Born in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu on 16 January 1978, the favourite actor began his adulthood doing a series of odd jobs such as a salesman at a retail store, cashier at a fast food joint and even a phone booth operator.
Following a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dhanraj Baid Jain College in Chennai, Sethupathi then took up to being an accountant, which led him to live and work in Dubai for better pay as he was taking care of three of his siblings.

During his time in Dubai, VJS met and fell in love with his wife, Jessie, online. Unhappy with his job, he returned to India in 2003 and married his wife the same year. While trying his hand at different jobs, coming across Koothupattarai’s poster led him to consider director Balu Mahendra’s remark of him having ‘a photogenic face’ and that motivated him to pursue a career in acting.

Making his debut in M.Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi as a background actor in 2004, he took to playing minor supporting roles for five years before landing his first lead role in Seenu Ramasamy’s Thenmerku Paruvakaatru in 2010, which won him three National Film awards including the Best Tamil Feature of the year.

His career as an actor began taking off in 2012 with his films Pizza and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom. He went on to bag the Edison Awards and the Big FM Tamil Entertainment Awards for each film respectively at the Norway Tamil Film Festival. With that marking the beginning of his transformation into the most popular “Indie-film-star” to have walked the planet of Tamil cinema, VJS has gone to star in over 30 films, even essaying the role of a transgendered person in his controversial Super Deluxe that released earlier this year.
