5 Questions You Should Seriously Ask Yourself When Deciding What To Study In College

Don’t take this lightly.

So, your sekolah menengah days are finally over. Yay! Now, the best part of your teen and young adult life – life in college – begins!

But, before you get to enjoy the freedom and fun that comes with college life, first you must ask yourself a very important question: What college course should you take?

Besides the usual (but crucial) questions regarding the programmes on offer, facilities, scholarships, and awards, there are also five other questions that you should seriously think about when deciding what course to enrol in…

#1 How bored will you be doing the jobs associated with the course that you’re about to take?

It’s no secret that some jobs pay more than others. But if your job bores you, then you’re less likely to be motivated to give it your all, which will then affect your performance. Remember this quote: “Do what you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

#2 Can you afford the study materials and equipment required to excel in your chosen course?

Text books aren’t the only things you’ll have to consider when choosing a course. Taking up creative courses such as photography or videography for example will require you to invest in cameras, lights, mics, and editing software in order for you to excel at it.

#3 Can you get a job easily in your preferred field of study?

You’ll need to do your research before deciding which course is better for you in terms of job prospect. Choosing a field of study where there’s already too many talents will only make it harder to land a job – even if you’re very good at what you do.

#4 What are your plans for the future?

This is probably one of the hardest questions to answer, as nobody really knows what that the future holds for us. But because the decisions you make today can affect the outcome of your future, it’s good to have an idea of what you want – even if it’s slightly vague at the moment.

For example, if you dream of migrating to a different country then it’s wise to choose a college with international partnerships and courses that are recognised outside of Malaysia.

#5 How broad or focused are the knowledge and skills related to the field of study of your choice?

It’s okay not to already have a dream occupation to work towards when you enter college, but it’s good practice to know what industries you can apply the skills and knowledge you’ll be learning from the course you’ve chosen to.

Good thing for you that Erican College sees the value and importance of keeping you informed about the career opportunities associated with each of their courses!
