The couple wanted to do their fairytale wedding their own way.

“I’m a licensed scuba diver with over 12 years of experience. So, when I was discussing ideas for my wedding with my cousin, Aravind, who runs a scuba diving centre on ECR, we zeroed in on this plan. It was a bit difficult to convince my wife initially, but she finally agreed. She underwent training for three days and we were ready for the big plunge, literally,” says Chinnadurai.

An underwater wedding comes with challenges of its own. The couple could not lock on a wedding date as the conditions of the ocean were unpredictable and had to ensure that it was suitable for the occasion. They had printed out wedding invitations for February and left the date blank not knowing when would be the perfect time to dive. Special wedding attire were made so that it clings to the body even while in water.

The ceremony under the ocean included tying of the knot and exchanging of garlands. “A few of our close family members were present on the shore, waiting for us. They were worried and kept calling to check in on us. Only a few instructors came with us. We sailed for about 5km off the shore in a boat and then divided. It was 60ft deep, where we tied the knot and exchanged garlands under the water”, said the bride.

The memorable wedding also stands as an awareness about ocean pollution. The couple believes their underwater wedding would grab the attention of many and they could raise awareness to protecting our ocean.
