The victim Laeek Khan approached local authorities in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India after he realised the lamp did not posses any magical powers, as described in the folk tale of Aladdin and his wish-granting genie that appears when the lamp is rubbed.
The suspects pretended to conjure up a genie to convince the lamp's authenticity. The men eventually offered him the lamp, promising it would bring wealth, health and good fortune, for RM836,000. However they settled for a down payment of RM386,000.

According to the victim during one of his visits the genie actually made an appearance in front of him, and only later that he realised one of the scammers had been dressing up as the iconic figure. The men were arrested and were held in custody for further investigations.
The scammers have also cheated other families using the same scam. The total amount involved in the scams is estimated to be several million Indian rupees.
