Is Delayed Punishment Justified?

Is condemnation the solution to curbing sexual crimes?

is delayed punishment justified?

In yesterday’s episode of Bigg Boss, one of the beloved players of season 3, Saravanan, was unexpectedly evicted for a misconduct of harassment towards women in the past.

In the weekend episode 2 weeks prior, model Meera Mithun attempted to frame director Cheran and destroy his image by saying he acted inappropriately with her during one of the tasks they had to participate in.

While reviewing the video of the incident, it was proven that Meera’s claims were false, redeeming director Cheran back to grace. Kamal Hassan reprimanded Meera’s actions saying false accusations of assault of any nature is wrong not only because it is a cruel thing to do, but also because it takes away from the seriousness of real assaults that happens to other women.

While this issue was in discussion, Saravanan volunteered the information of getting too close to women in crowded buses during his college days and that he has since outgrown the habit. Taken aback by his admittance, Kamal Hassan pointed out that the behavior is unacceptable and is something that should not be normalized while the audience laughed it off.

Following the incident, singer Chinmayi took it to Twitter to condemn the makers of the Bigg Boss show for not taking the matter seriously as the issue is a prevalent social ill in India, to a point it is almost an expected everyday occurrence among women who ride the public transport.

Her tweet inspired many others to speak up causing the makers of the show to come under fire by netizens for brushing off the matter lightly. In response to the public uproar, the Bigg Boss team called Saravanan into the confession room on the 29th of July to issue an apology to the public for his misconduct during his early days.

The 52-year-old clarified that he wasn’t proud of his actions and was meaning to tell the younger generation to not do such things as he has outgrown such misdemeanor over the years. He also went on to make a heartfelt apology to the general public for his actions all those years ago.

However, following all these, Saravanan was called into the confession room yesterday where the makers of the show told him that they couldn’t pay much attention to his confession as they were too caught up in the Meera-Cheran issue and as a show that they do take harassment seriously and have no choice but to evict him from the game show.

While many find the decision to be justified as victims of sexual harassment suffer from the aftermath for years, an equally substantial number are of the opinion that the decision was in poor taste as he has not only come clean, but did so with the intention of making sure the younger generation doesn’t follow suit with such misdemeanors.  They are also arguing that this will serve as a fine example as to why perpetrators shouldn’t come out to admit their crimes due to judgment from society, making it difficult for them to evolve from their issues and rectify their mistakes.

What is your take on this? Was the decision to evict Saravanan by the Bigg Boss team justified? Would there have been a better way to punish him for the sins of his past? Let us know your thoughts in the comments and stay tuned to RAAGA for more thought provoking reads!
